Into The Wild

I just recently finished reading Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer and thought I would give everyone my esteemed option. Plus it has been a few days since I have done a blog post and this is really the only thing I can think to blog about!

For those of you that are not familiar with the book, it is a story about a recent college graduate that decided to walk away from everything he had, hitchhike to Alaska, and wander into the wilderness alone to live off the land. The author complied as much evidence as he could, including a diary, letters, interviews, camera, and notes, to retrace Chris McCandless' steps in an adventure that eventually starved him to death.

It was a compelling story and one I am glad I read because it makes you appreciate McCandless' strength, determination, and courage, while leaving you thinking about your own life. While much of the book is based on facts, the author fill gaps with his own opinions and stories, which I thought made the book a bit confusing at times. The was also a lot of vocabulary used that I was unfamiliar with because I am not an avid climber or outdoors-woman. It was amazing to me to see how Chris survived for several months with little or no money, no car, and very little food. He made several friends throughout his travels and Jon Krakauer did a wonderful job of incorporating their stories and relationships with Chris into the story. I would recommend reading this book if you are looking for something a little heavier and more serious.

If I am not mistaken, this book was made into a movie that is currently out in the theatres. I will most definitely be adding this to my Netflix queue when it comes out on DVD the 4th of March.

If you enjoyed the writing, i've read 2 other of krakauer's books that i enjoyed more than Into the Wild (although i enoyed that one also). The very popular "Into Thin Air" which had some simlar themes, and the less popular but more interesting in my opinion "Under the Banner of Heaven" enjoy!
